First up is the main attraction: the Original Chicken flavor. According to the official description:

“These potato chips recreate the taste of KFC’s flagship product, the Original Chicken. You can easily enjoy the flavor of the Original Chicken, made with Colonel Sanders’ secret recipe, in potato chip form. This product has been supervised by Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan to replicate the taste of ‘Original Chicken.'” – Calbee

Got it, got it. I can’t wait to try these!

Review

When you order KFC to go, its aroma often fills your car or the train, making everyone around a little envious. However, the chips don’t have a strong smell when you open the bag. Initially, we searched for that KFC taste in our mouths, and after a moment, the original spice flavor emerged, though only slightly. It’s possible Calbee didn’t get the full, secret recipe from KFC, which might explain why it feels a bit lacking.

“Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, KFC’s summer staple ‘Red Hot Chicken’ flavor is now available as potato chips. These chips offer the distinctive spicy kick and chicken umami of the Red Hot Chicken. This product has been supervised by Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan to replicate the taste of ‘Red Hot Chicken.'” – Calbee

Review

Red Hot Chicken has become a summer classic! We wish it were available all year round. As fans of the original, we were curious about how the flavor would translate into chips.

Visually, these chips differ from the Original Chicken flavor with a more rugged cut that mimics the crunchy texture of Red Hot Chicken.

Left: Original chicken, Right: Red Hot Chicken

Unfortunately, the chips weren’t as spicy as we hoped. They could use a lot more heat. However, they were delicious as a snack overall. If we had to nitpick, adding paprika powder or something similar to make them look spicier would have been nice.

Summary – MATOME –

Both flavors were delicious potato chips, even if we forget the KFC collaboration for a moment! If you’re a KFC fan, you should definitely give them a try. In fact, after eating these chips, we craved the real thing and went to KFC the next day.lol

These are limited-time offers (available until mid-August), so if you’re curious, try them soon!
